Understanding IROKOTV Web Portal – Irokotv is a web portal that offers on-demand access to Nigerian films for a fee. On December 1, 2011, irokotv was released. Its parent company, iROKO Partners, was founded in December 2010 by Jason Njoku and Bastian Gotter and is based in London, United Kingdom. irokotv is a legitimate streaming distributor of African films around the world.
Jason Njoku, iroko’s co-founder, realized how popular African movies had become while living in London. Despite rising global demand, there was no legal way for him to watch films from his homeland. The company’s CEO, Jason Njoku, and Bastian Gotter, the company’s COO, met when they were both students at the University of Manchester.

Njoku attempted to start his own business several times after graduating from university, but each time he failed. When Njoku found it difficult to find Nollywood movies online for his mother, who he was living with at the time, he was inspired to start the business. After studying the Nollywood industry and finding a lack of infrastructure for international distribution, Njoku flew to Lagos, Nigeria, and bought online licenses for Nollywood films directly from the producers. He further used the Google-owned platform to stream the licensed Nollywood movies for free on his site, Nollywoodlove, after striking a deal with YouTube in Germany. In a short period of time, the channel grew in popularity and profitability, and it was featured in a variety of international news outlets, including CNBC, CNN, and Techcrunch. Nollywoodlove’s success led to a successful investment from Tiger Global Management, a US-based hedge fund, which led a two-round investment totaling US$8 million, making it one of the first investments into a West African Dot-com company. In July 2012, Kinnevik, a Swedish hedge fund, led another $2 million investment round. In order to sell Nollywood films to a global audience, irokotv partners with most of Nollywood’s top film production houses and purchases exclusive online licenses to their films. The majority of the company’s audience is from abroad, with the top five countries, which include the US, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, and Germany, respectively.
