Biographical information
Asa was born Bukola Elemide to Nigerian parents in Paris, France. Her family moved back to Nigeria when she was two years old. Asa was raised in a small town near Lagos, in Nigeria’s south-western region. Asa returned to France after 20 years in Nigeria, and it was there that her musical career began.
Asa discovered musical acts such as Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Raphael Saadiq, Lauryn Hill, Femi Kuti, Angélique Kidjo, a multiple Grammy Award-winning singer from the Benin Republic, whenever she returned home from school in Nigeria. In 2004, Asa met her manager and friend Janet, who introduced her to Nigerian music heavyweight Cobhams Asuquo, who later became her musical partner and producer.
