Manager, Building Services Operations – University of Maryland (College Park, MD)

In this leadership role, you’ll play a pivotal role in overseeing the daily operations of five housekeeping zones, ensuring a clean and welcoming environment for our faculty, students, and staff. You’ll manage a team of approximately 80 employees, including supervisors, team leaders, housekeeping leads, and housekeepers, who are responsible for cleaning over 3.5 million square feet of campus buildings.
What You’ll Do
- Provide daily operational oversight for five housekeeping zones, ensuring efficient and effective cleaning processes are followed.
- Lead and motivate a team of 80+ employees, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
- Manage special requests and event coverage, ensuring cleanliness during peak periods like commencement or campus events.
- Oversee overtime rotation, ensuring fair and balanced scheduling practices.
- Manage the vendor-managed inventory (VMI) program, guaranteeing a consistent supply of cleaning supplies.
- Maintain accurate equipment inventory, implement preventative maintenance practices, and scheduling repairs as needed.
- Conduct regular workload reviews and implement adjustments to optimize cleaning schedules and resource allocation.
- Manage project work and reporting, documenting progress and ensuring adherence to deadlines.
- Oversee vendor and off-campus cleaning contracts, ensuring quality service delivery.
- Manage weekend and holiday coverage schedules, guaranteeing consistent cleaning throughout the year.
- Manage and maintain employee technology, including tablets, pagers, phones, and cleaning software.
- Oversee the daily rotation plan for staff absences and medical restrictions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for building strong relationships with staff, supervisors, and other departments.
You’re a Perfect Fit If You Have
- A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience in hospitality, facilities management, or a related field.
- At least 10 years of experience, with a minimum of 5 years supervising housekeeping and/or facilities operations, preferably in a large custodial setting (with at least 50 employees).
- Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to manage and motivate a diverse workforce and build a unified team environment.
- In-depth knowledge of housekeeping practices, OSHA/MOSH safety regulations, and cleaning equipment.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with proficiency in using computers for basic tasks (email, word processing) and more complex software (spreadsheets, scheduling, project management).
- Experience in training and supervising housekeeping staff.
- Strong budgeting and inventory management skills, with the ability to make independent decisions.
