How to Log Out of Gmail on an Android

If you’re the only person who uses your Android smartphone or tablet, you might simply leave yourself logged in to your Gmail account on the device. But you can log out of a Gmail account on an Android device if you wish or sign in to multiple accounts at once. You can also clear all your personal data from an Android phone, which can be useful if you’re disposing of the device.

The Android Gmail Logout Process

Android phones generally come with a Gmail app that you can use to access your Google email account. Your Google account is also associated with other features on the phone, such as cloud backup facilities and Google apps like Google Maps, Google Drive and YouTube.

If you want to log out of a certain account on your phone, it will generally be disassociated with all of those apps at once. You can do so through the phone’s Settings app by scrolling to the “Accounts” section, tapping the “Google” button, then finding the account that you wish to sign out of. Then tap the account name and under the “More” menu and tap “Remove Account” to remove the account from your device.

Using Multiple Gmail Accounts

You aren’t limited to using just one Gmail login on your Android phone. You can add additional accounts through the Gmail app. To do so, tap the menu button in the Gmail app, then tap the downward-facing arrow next to your username. Choose “Add Account” and follow the directions to enter the username and password for the account and verify your identity as needed.

Afterward, you’ll be able to click the downward arrow next to your username to switch between email accounts as you which, keeping all of your accounts updated.

Clearing All Personal Data

If you are planning to sell your phone, trade it in or give it away, you may want to clear your personal data from the phone so that nobody else can access it once it’s no longer in your hands.

You will want to back up or otherwise copy any data from the phone you want to save. Then, go to the Settings app from the home screen, tap the “System” menu and choose “Reset.” Select “Factory data reset” and then tap “Reset phone” to continue. Click “Erase everything” and wait for a few minutes for the reset process to finish.

Your Google account and other data will be removed from the phone.

Warnings

  • You will be logged out of the Google account in the Play Store app, as well as in all apps that require a Google account.
