Full Job Description

Artward Bound is a free, four-year programme that prepares high school students (grades 9–12) interested in visual arts and design with the artistic and academic skills necessary for admission to and success in art/design colleges or other post-secondary institutions.

Position Description

Mentors play a crucial role in the Artward Bound programme, supporting classroom instruction and activities. With a balanced focus on art, academics, and life skills, mentors are essential to students’ overall success and growth. They assist students with homework, time management, organisation, and study skills. The Bilingual Mentor (Spanish) must be fluent in both Spanish and English.

Responsibilities

  • Assist art teachers with delivering curriculum content.
  • Support students on campus and communicate their needs to Artward Bound staff.
  • Provide tutorial and academic support as needed.
  • Offer individualized mentoring to Artward Bound students.
  • Help organize, prepare, and dismantle the final exhibition.
  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Senior Mentors will lead weekly meetings and document meeting notes, student needs, and incidents for Artward Bound staff.

Requirements

  • Fluency in Spanish, either as a native speaker or proficiently bilingual.
  • Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
  • 1-3 years of experience working with youth.
  • Experience providing tutorial and/or academic support services is a plus.
  • Interest in Positive and Creative Youth Development.
  • Patience and a strong desire to help students succeed.
  • Responsible, dependable, honest, and mature.
  • Friendly, patient, and sensitive to a diverse student population.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Additional Information

Term/Schedule

  • Orientation and Training: July 8 – 12, 2024, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Summer Session: July 15 – August 15, 2024, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Final Staff Debrief: August 16, 2024
  • Salary: Starting at $15/hour.

Proof of identity and employment eligibility must be shown within three days of starting employment. Employment authorization is not granted until all paperwork is completed.
