Founding (1948)

Incorporation (1961)

Following Nigeria’s independence from the United Kingdom, UBA was formed on February 23, 1961, to take over BFB’s operations. UBA’s shares were subsequently floated on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE)

IPO (1970)

In 1970, UBA became the first Nigerian bank to list its shares on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, becoming the first Nigerian bank to do so (IPO)

Mergers (1990 – 2006)

UBA was formed by merging the innovative and fast-growing Standard Trust Bank, founded in 1990, and UBA, one of Nigeria’s largest and oldest banks.

The merger was completed on August 1, 2005, and it was one of the largest on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).

Following that merger, UBA went on to buy Continental Trust Bank the following year, growing the UBA name even more. In 2006, UBA bought Trade Bank, liquidated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Public Offering and Further Acquisitions (2007 – 2008)

In 2007, UBA completed another successful joint public offering rights issue and acquired three liquidated banks: City Express Bank, Metropolitan Bank, and African Express Bank. Afrinvest UK was also bought by the bank, which was renamed UBA Capital, UK.

In 2008, UBA stepped up its efforts to develop a solid local and African brand by acquiring two more liquidated banks, Gulf Bank and Liberty Bank.

Establishment of Subsidiaries (2008 – Present)

With the formation of UBA Cameroon, UBA Cote d’Ivoire, UBA Uganda, UBA Sierra Leone, and UBA Liberia, and the acquisition of a 51 percent stake in Banque Internationale du Burkina Faso, UBA has been expanding its African footprint.

It was also the country’s largest bank, with a 40% market share. UBA has 20 African subsidiaries at the moment.
