Electricity Tariff in Nigeria | All You Need to Know – There have been many developments in the power sector in recent years, one of which is the increased usage of prepaid meters.
Through the use of prepaid meters, a new billing system has emerged, which is focused on four major factors: location, tariff class, tariff cost, and the amount of energy consumed (in kWh)
There are 11 different electricity distribution companies in Nigeria, all of which are based in different parts of the country. They’re known as the DisCos, and they consist of the following:
- Enugu Distribution Company
- Kano Distribution Company
- Yola Distribution Company
- Jos Distribution Company
- Kaduna Distribution Company
- Abuja Distribution Company
- Port-Harcourt Distribution Company
- Benin Distribution Company
- Ikeja Distribution Company
- Ibadan Distribution Company
- Eko Distribution Company
The DisCo that serves your area determines your electricity rate.
The amount of money you spend on electricity is determined by the tariff class you are in. The following are the five classes:
Class A. Residential: The residential class comprises a large number of consumers (and probably you as well). For a flat or a home, they use electricity.
Class B. Commercial: Customers in this category use electricity for purposes other than their homes, such as offices or shops.
Class C. Industrial: Customers in this category only use the premises to manufacture goods. It’s called “Industrial” for a reason.
Class D. Special: This category includes hospitals, government institutions, colleges, religious institutions, water boards, agriculture industries, universities, and so on.
Class E. Street Lights belong to this class.
The tariff class, in general, is determined by your class and the DisCos that serve you. Tariff classes, on the other hand, are subdivided. Typically, the division is based on each class’s average electricity consumption.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) implemented a new electricity tariff in 2015, known as the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO), which went into effect on February 1, 2016. It was projected that the rise would be about 45 percent.

Residential customers in the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, and Kogi states covered by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) franchise can now pay N23.60 per kilowatt/hour, up from N14 per kilowatt/hour previously.
Residential customers in the Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution areas also saw N10 and N8 rise in their energy charges, respectively.
Residential consumers in Kaduna and Benin Electricity Distribution Firms faced the same situation, with energy charges increasing by N11.05 and N9.26, respectively. Contact the Public Service Commission of South Carolina if you need more information about one of your utility services.
